Book ClubSaturday, January 24th 10:00-11:30 at the home of Andy D. Women's Book Club: TWILIGHT by Stephanie Meyer. "They're good looking, strong, smart and rich—what's not to like?" This month we invite women whose daughters have read "Twilight" to a discussion of the vampire romance novel that has sold more than 17 million copies. The wildly popular book has been reading material for many of our own teenage girls This month's book club exchange is not an endorsement of the book (no book club selections are considered sacred study material). Rather, it is a forum to discuss how we keep abreast of books that our young people are talking about? What questions should we be asking as we read? How can we help our girls be discerning about books at they choose to read and about the themes that are in the stories they take in? Our facilitator is Andy D, an AP English teacher, a literature afficionado, grandmother, leader of the Christian Educators Association International and Riveroaks member. In response to the story and the ideas it presents, Andy talked with our youth leadership and WIC. Then Andy compiled and prepared commentaries and discussion questions. The will help women who want to better understand what so many people are talking about, who want to share their thoughts, and who seek guidelines for choosing secular books. Andy will facilitate a discussion for mother and daughters on Saturday, January 24th from 10:00 – 11:30. She will host us at her home. All women (and any high school girls who have already read Twilight) are welcome. The story: Bella Swan moves from sunny Phoenix, Arizona to rainy and overcast Forks, Washington to live with her dad, fully expecting that it will be miserable for her. As she tries to assimilate into everyday high school life in the small town, she finds herself drawn to Edward Cullen, her mysterious and standoffish Biology lab partner. Yet the attraction between Edward and Bella grows, and soon Bella finds herself immersed in a dangerous adventure that includes Edward's entire family - made up completely of vampires.
